More than three decades of research
has firmly established that genetic factors account for more than
half of the risk for alcoholism and environmental factors account
for the remainder. This statement, however, belies the true
complexity of the mechanisms underlying the risk for, and protection
against, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Genes and
environmental factors interact in very complex ways.
