Narkomzdrav was the first ministry of health in the postrevolutionary Russia. Just like Zemstvo medicine, Narkomzdrav activities concentrated on preventive medicine. Of particular concern in the Russia after the revolution of 1917 was fighting STDs and the epidemic of alcohol abuse.
