The nomenclature used to
define DQA1 and DQB1 alleles are based on a numerical system.
The different numbers have no biological significance –
rather they reflect the order in which the alleles were discovered.
So, numbers like *0201 and *0301 were discovered first – and
therefore, are among the most common DQA1 and DQB1 alleles.
