This example of case ascertainment using administrative data from
Manitoba, Canada has shown that when compared to self-report data,
administrative data are a valid source for diabetes surveillance.
Interpretation of prevalence estimates should be made with knowledge
of the case definition chosen, because estimates can vary
substantially depending on the algorithm used to identify cases of
chronic disease.
