Cross - sectionnal associations between common carotid artery IMT and cardiovascular risk factor have been demonstrated in many studies ( 2-4) . IMT increases also with the number of risk factors associated with age, gender ( male/ female) , smoking, hypertension, hypercholesteroemia and diabetes mellitus.
