For many
physicians the decision to enter medicine is akin to answering “a calling.” This
calling involves a conviction and commitment similar to that seen in the clergy or public
service. Under the ancient tenets of the Hippocratic oath, physicians vow to uphold the
injunction, “primum nom nocre,” first do no harm. Once this oath to serve is
taken a physician’s life is never entirely his/her own. The profession of medicine
demands a commitment to service, patient advocacy, and social responsibility. This
commitment has traditionally taken precedence over economic interests. |
