“The great
majority of men live lives of quiet desperation”
Thoreau. For most of the human race work is boring, repetitive and unfulfilling. One of the challenges of the 21st century is how to change that…….. Yet work is important to our dignity, our personal sense of importance, our sense of solidarity with our workmates as much or more than for the money it puts in our pockets. It is important to be part of “the world of work”-particularly for men who have less defined domestic roles and gain less of their satisfaction from child rearing and home making. For a fortunate few their work is their absorbing interest and deepest satisfaction-the artist, the scientist. For many professionals their abiding interest and enthusiasm is for their work often at the expense of the rest of their personal lives.Doctors are notorious offenders! |
