In a normal
pregnancy - this is now at the same scale: this is a vessel that was underlying the
placenta, these vascular changes that I’m describing occur only in the maternal vessel
that supplies the placenta. I think it’s obvious that there’s a huge increase in
diameter, which has a striking effect on blood flow. This change is physiological, and
this does occur in preeclampsia. Many of the vessels look just like the ones on the
previous slides. So you can imagine there’s a pretty striking reduction in the blood
supply to the placenta if these vessels don’t undergo that physiologic modification. So
that, I think, is a lot of evidence suggesting Dr. Page’s idea, that there’s a
reduction in blood supply to the placenta, seems to hold some weight. |
