Presentation Abstract:
Writing Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham:
The Ramesside fortress-town of Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham, close to the modern city of Mersa Matrouh, is the largest pharaonic Egyptian settlement on the Mediterranean coast west of the Nile Delta. One of the most notable features of the site - which is currently being excavated by the University of Liverpool - is the extent to which the presence of the only known commander of the fortress, Neb-Re, is represented on monumental inscriptions from the site. This paper will examine these inscriptions and what they tell us about the operation of the fortress and Neb-Re's own self-presentational agenda.
