The 3rd Scientific Conference of the Mediterranean GID-Parmenides at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina - 22 November 2024
As a continuation of the Scientific Conference of the Mediterranean GID-Parmenides initiative and as a part of the French-Egyptian Science Year activities, the 3rd Scientific Conference of the Mediterranean GID-Parmenides takes place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina from 22 to 24 June 2010 under the theme "Richness and Mediterranean Diversity, Biology and Culture". The conference is supported by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the GID (Inter-academic Group for Development), the Institute of France, the FMSH (Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme) and the Prince Albert 1er Foundation.
The Mediterranean academic program (PARMENIDES) initiated by the French Académie des sciences, was launched in 2005 in order to gather, with a common goal of development and scientific excellence, academies of sciences from all the countries on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The 1st Scientific Conference of the Mediterranean was held in Paris, France in 2008 whereas, the 2nd Scientific Conference of the Mediterranean was held in Rome, Italy in 2009.
During the conference, eminent scientists and speakers discuss different issues concerning the biological and societal biodiversity. The conference tackles different topics related to the biodiversity of Mediterranean woodland ecosystems in a changing context, the role of NGOs in knowledge management and the promotion of Mediterranean forests, the aquaculture in the Mediterranean, the marine biodiversity as a reservoir for pharmaceuticals and research models, and the digital libraries in the Mediterranean region. In addition, three workshops take place regarding the future of the Tree, the Fish and the Book in the Mediterranean.
The conference is preceded by the EMAN: Euro Mediterranean Academic Network. The first formal assembly of the EMAN was held on 21 June 2010 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina with the participation of 17 international academies.
The assembly discussed the general missions of EMAN; GID websites and communication and publication policy among other issues, and was followed by a musical evening.
