North and South - Phase II (Cairo)

Within the framework of the program Support to Cultural Diversity and Creativity in Egypt, “North and South” team arrived in Cairo on Monday, the 23rd of February to complete the 2nd phase of their journey. The journey, which was launched on the 20th of February, started from Alexandria where participants spent three days, after which they headed to Cairo.
The Cairo stop lasted for four days starting from Monday the 23rd to Thursday the 26th of February. On their first day in Cairo, participants visited the Egyptian Museum. On the 2nd day of Phase II, Tuesday the 24th of February, they visited the Modern Egyptian Arts Museum. On the same day, participants also visited the historic building of Bayt Al-Sinnari in Sayeda Zeinab where they attended a number of lectures by Ms. Mai Khaled and Dr. Haytham Nawar. The day was finally concluded with attending a musical event at the Egyptian Center for Culture & Arts (Makan).
In the attempt to expose participants to the rich and diverse historical background that Egypt possess, the 3rd day of phase II was devoted to visiting medieval Cairo. The Religions Complex including; the Hanging Church, Mar Girgis Church and the Synagogue of Ben Ezra (the Jewish temple). Participants also visited landmarks of Fatimid Cairo including; Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque, Al-Moez Street and Al-Hussein Mosque.
On the final day of Phase II, Thursday the 26th of February, participants attended a film screening at Medrar foundation for contemporary art, which was preceded with lectures by Mr. Ahmed Shawky and Dr. Rania Foad.
As Phase II came to an end, “North and South” team is preparing to resume their journey on February the 27th; travelling further south, and into the heart of the ancient Egyptian civilization, to their next stop in the historical cities of Luxor and Aswan.
