Thesis Collection
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is a depository library for theses and dissertations from all Egyptian universities, in cooperation with the
Ain Shams University Library
.
Any student who has obtained a Master's or a Doctoral degree from any Egyptian university must deposit a copy of his/her thesis with the BA as a requirement for the fulfillment of his/her degree.
The library holds approximately 41,400 theses of which about 1,400 are dated prior to 2000. Theses are available mainly in Arabic and English, although some are available in other languages.
Searching and Identifying Theses
To search for a cataloged thesis use the BA Catalog. Select theses have been digitized for your convenience. Below are some hints to help you with your search:
To search by the
name of the student
use the Author search.
To search by the
thesis subject
use the Subject search
To search by
University
or
Faculty
select Anywhere from the drop down menu under the Keyword tab.
To search by
Advisory Committee
use the Author search.
To search by
Publication Year
select Publisher from the drop down menu under the Keyword tab.
The catalog does not provide a full listing of the printed theses collection.
Accessing Theses
The print Theses Collection is stored in the closed stacks, however, selected theses are available to BA patrons upon request from any Reference Desk. Access to some theses may be restricted.
The thesis will be checked out under a member's library card but is for use in the library only.
Members must sign a declaration agreeing to acknowledge the work of the author if they use it as a reference or cited work.
All theses must be returned to the Reference Desk and will then be removed from the member's library card.
Access Restrictions
Access to some theses may be restricted due to conditions outside of the Library's control. These conditions include, but are not limited to:
Viewing restrictions requested by the author.
Photocopying restrictions requested by the author.
Public access restrictions imposed by the university.
Rules and Regulations
According to Egyptian copyright law, copyright ownership of all theses is held by the author, or, in some cases, by the university.
Theses are only to be used for private or academic study and research.
Any citations taken from a thesis must be properly acknowledged to the author.
Theses can only be used by members who have registered access, members may not allow others to use the thesis while it is issued to them.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The library has compiled a collection of online databases featuring theses and dissertations from universities worldwide. Abstracts are provided, along with the author's name, university affiliation, degree, and keywords. In most cases, the full text of the theses is also available.
CCSD theses-EN-ligne
(French)
A collection of multidisciplinary French Ph.D. theses. Provides English & French keywords and abstracts. Title and text of the theses are in French. Full text of most of the theses is available for online display and download.
ETD Center
Electronic Theses and Dissertations from OhioLINK, including member universities based in the USA. Electronic theses and dissertations are browsable by author, university/department, or searchable by keyword. Users can limit their search to theses with full text available and to degree level.
ERC - Online Theses and Dissertations
Provides full text of theses and dissertations in computational engineering from Mississippi State University.
Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD)
Offers theses from over 220 NDLTD members including 195 member universities and 28 institutions. You can conduct a cross search among all the collections, or limit your search to the theses of a specific university. Most of them include full text.
Theses Canada Portal
Provides free access to the full text electronic versions of Canadian theses and dissertations that were published from 1998 to 2002. Users are offered many possibilities to search and access theses, including searching within the full text of theses, and limiting results to the electronic theses available on the portal.
VT EDTs: Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Search, browse, and access the full text of more than 6,400 dissertations, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University . Of the over 6,400 theses, more than 4,400 are unrestricted and provide the full text. For each downloadable thesis, the file size in indicated and the approximate download time in indicated for different type of Internet connections (i.e. modem, ISDN, etc.)
