Doctors often talk of “problem
patients”. There is no such thing as a problem patient, but there are problem doctors! A
problem doctor is one who holds such attitudes. Patients
do not follow doctors’ instructions for all sorts of reasons (see lectures on attitudes
and KAP), but usually not because they are dissatisfied. However, there is evidence that
patients doctor shop (consulting more than one doctor during the same episode of illness,
and often obtaining multiple, duplicate or unnecessary medications) when they are
dissatisfied, and several studies have reported dissatisfaction with information giving by
HK doctors. There is a link between the satisfaction with information given to cancer
patients, the DPR and the patients’ reported QoL. |
