The convergence of computing and communications will allow
for greater efficiency and accuracy in conducting epidemiologic and public
health research projects. Remote site data collection, automated
data entry and verification, immediate access to summary data, and increased
communication between researchers and between researchers and participants
will have an enormous impact on the management of large scale research
programs.
The University of Minnesota School of Public Health recently initiated
the Epidemiologic
Cyberspace Cohort Study. The purpose of this study is to examine
the feasibility of the use of the Internet for conducting prospective epidemiologic
studies. The site invites people to join the study and
complete the on-line questionnaire related to diet and cancer. Follow-up
questionnaires are planned for six month intervals.
