Heartworm disease
in dogs and related carnivores is caused by a filarial nematode (a very
large threadlike white-to-cream colored roundworm), Dirofilaria immitis
described by Joseph Leidy in 1856 in Philadelphia. The adult
worms live in the right side of the heart (right ventricle) and its blood
vessels like the pulmonary arteries.
