Upon his map of the streets around Golden Square, Snow superimposed both the water pumps that poor local residents used to draw drinking water, and the housing locations of those who died from cholera during the outbreak. The cholera deaths largely concentrated around one pump located on Broad Street. Snow used this evidence to persuade local authorities to remove the pump handle. A popular myth is that Snow furtively removed the pump handle himself, under cover of night.
