The primary difference between a regular and a light cigarette was that the light had more vent holes in the filter. This meant that when the cigarette was attached to the machine measuring yields, it would suck air directly through the vent holes as well as down the column of the burning cigarette – essentially producing a diluted smoke coming out the end of the cigarette, and so getting a lower tar and nicotine rating.
