Kwashiorkor usually occurs in children under the age of 2 yrs, due to mom stopping breastfeeding too soon. Marasmus normally occurs in children between 1-5 yr of age.
Kwashiorkor and marasmus can also present as a “mixed kwashiorkor/marasmic” with the patient presenting with some symptoms from each disease.
