This was the era in American medicine that is usually labeled as the "heroic age of medicine."  Looking back at the time between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars it is difficult for us today to say who was more heroic, the doctors plying their dangerous remedies, or their patients who endured these basically ineffective and potentially hazardous cures.
