The term calomel seems to have been coined in 17th century Europe from the terms calos, which means good, and the word melas , meaning black, as calomel was seen as an being an extremely effective drug to aid the body in expelling an excess of black bile, which was one of Galen of Pergamon’s 4 cardinal humors.
