There are strong, but not precise, indications that injuries are important determinants for disability in the Armed Forces. This table displays the breakdown of the leading reasons for disability as coded by the Army, Navy, and Air Force PEBs, respectively, using the VASRD coding system. Impairments from orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions are clearly the leading factors accounting for disability cases reviewed by PEBs in the services, particularly for the Army (53%) and Navy (63%). This information is highly suggestive that injuries may be a major reason for disability in the services, because many injuries have orthopedic or musculoskeletal implications. However, it is difficult to distinguish injury-related from non-injury-related disabilities in the VASRD coding scheme.
