Missions
BASEF mission is to increase Egyptian students awareness of scientific method of thinking, exposure to, and participation in inquiry-based learning through the development of science and engineering projects by middle school and high school students, and to showcase and celebrate that learning.
What is BASEF?
The Planetarium Science Center (PSC), is organizing the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) in March each year. BASEF is affiliated from the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF); the largest world pre-college science competition.
Every year, BASEF top six winning projects, top six projects will represent Egypt in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) which takes place in the United States of America.
How to participate?
Target age group: school students 14–18 years (middle school & high school) for the main competition that will qualify top six projects to represent Egypt in Regeneron ISEF, and also welcome promising underage students to join and compete on some special awards” best idea, best presentation, and best team project”.
BASEF welcomes students who are capable of creative thinking and have innovative ideas in any field of science or engineering.
Students will present their science project results in the form of a report, display board, and models – if applicable- that they have created. Students will be asked to conduct a research in a certain topic, of their choice, to which their project will be related.

Students from Alexandria and 7 governorates (Dakahlia, El Gharbeya, Kafr El Sheikh, Beheira, Damietta, Portsaid and Matrouh) can participate in BASEF through Local Fairs. They can participate in BASEF with an individual or team project (maximum 2 students by group).
Each student will need to prepare a display board to communicate his work to others. For more details about how to prepare the display board, please
check.
BASEF committee will organize many affiliate fairs in Alexandria to encourage schools participation in promoting science fairs, expected to receive about 200 projects. The top winning projects from each affiliate fair inside Alexandria will qualify to BASEF finals directly.
BASEF will also organize eight local fairs covering 8 governorates, and will offer these Local Fairs the judging committees to ensure that the assessment is in line with Regeneron ISEF standards and guidelines.
The winning projects of both Affiliate fairs inside Alexandria, and Affiliate local fairs will qualify to compete in BASEF finals at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center (BACC).
Students can choose their research project from a variety of scientific themes, such as: animal sciences, behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry and microbiology, Earth and planetary sciences, electrical and mechanical engineering, energy and transportation, environmental management, medicine and health sciences, physics, mathematics, astronomy, or plant sciences.
After choosing the theme, participating students are asked to prepare a research paper, a data handbook, a prototype (optional), a display board, an abstract and a PowerPoint presentation.
The projects will be judged by university professors, specialized scientists and engineers, as well as industry professional volunteers. The Grand Award evaluation is judged using a 100-point scale, with points assigned to creative abilities, scientific thinking, engineering goals, thoroughness, skills, and clarity.
Where?
BASEF will be held at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center (BACC).
