Even tobacco use is social in origin and “sharing a cigarette” indicates this. However, the mode of delivery means that its toxic effects are significant, and the rituals of smoking are powerful maintainers of that behaviour. Tobacco use, like other drug use, seldom occurs in isolation. Instead, tobacco is smoked, with coffee, alcohol, food and sex, all activities which make most people feel good, and done socially (generally speaking).
