Other evidence for genetic components in the development of
Type 2 diabetes comes from studies of populations of
mixed heritage, where the founding populations have
different risks of developing the disease. Among the Pima
Indian population those of mixed heritage (half-Indian)
are mainly the first generation of offspring of mixed
heritage. Their prevalence rates are half way between
those of the full-Indians and those of the non-Indians.
Since these individuals are living in the same
environment, often in the same households, the difference
in prevalence rates can only be explained by genetic
factors.
