Today we have to deal with diseases caused by viruses (i.e., HIV), which are not susceptible to antibiotics, along with “super bugs” that no longer respond to our antibiotics arsenal. Furthermore, we are living in environments that are a mix of unknown chemicals and toxins, their interactions largely unknown without extensive research. Now, in the 21st Century, we are less sure of what works than 100 years ago, which is the reason we have become so dependent on statistics to deal with uncertainty.
