We need to understand how the data are distributed so we can begin to think about whether or not they all come from the same population. How the data are distributed can have an impact on what kind of statistical procedures we can use to test hypotheses.
Since most statistical procedures are based on the properties of a normal distribution curve (Bell Curve), data that do not meet the assumption of a normal distribution must be transformed before they can be used.
