Population-based health research carried out at MCHP provides evidence that a broad range of factors (inside and outside the health care system) play important roles in determining the health of the population. Initial services are not a critical determinant of health, and in fact the need for medical services is not the same for different populations.

Understanding the complex relations among demographics, health status, socioeconomic characteristics, supply of health care, and health care utilization is important for targeting the delivery of health care to meet the specific needs of a population.

MCHP designed a comprehensive Population Health Information System (POPULS) that provides a framework to evaluate health outcomes of system intervention and how these impact the health needs of populations. Evidence can then be used to inform policy decision-making.
