The EMECAS project is a collaborative effort, funded by Spanish Ministry of Health that seeks to evaluate the short-term effect of air pollution on health in urban Spanish population. In the first phase it undertook the assessment of the relationship between seven air pollutants and total daily mortality for all and for respiratory and cardiovascular causes in 16 Spanish cities (EMECAM, 1999).
