RR: Relative Risk for a 10m g/m3 increase in air pollutant CVS: All cardiovascular diseases HD: Heart diseases IHD: Ischemic heart diseases CBS: Cerebrovascular diseases In the second phase of the project a total of 16 cities, accounting for more than 10 million inhabitants, are participating. More complete and updated data, both for mortality and hospital admissions, have been collected, enabling adequate control of confounding and address an exploration of potential causes for heterogeneity. Combined estimates for cardiovascular admissions indicate an association with cardiovascular admissions (EMECAS group, to be published). An increase of 10 m g/m3 in the PM10 levels was associated with a 0.9 per cent increase in the number of hospital admissions for all cardiovascular diseases, and a 1.6 per cent for ischemic hearth diseases. Other pollutants also show an association with cardiovascular admissions. |
