Altogether, there are over 21 leishmanial species that are transmitted by about 30 species of sandflies, incubation can be 2-6 months or longer. Relapse may occur as many as 10 years after the first episode. Local trauma sometimes activates latent infection in cutaneous leishmaniasis.
