One type of carrier state is
defined by individuals that are carriers of the infectious agent but have no
outward clinical signs of infection. Examples of infectious agents commonly
associated with carrier states are hepatitis B and salmonella.
Another type of carrier state is individuals who are colonized with an agent.
That is, they harbor an infectious agent that causes no disease in the source
individual, but can if spread to other individuals. An example of an infectious
agent associated with colonization is Staphlococcus carried on the skin
or in the nose.
