Research on
chronic diseases has been a hallmark of NIH during the last 50 years,
especially on cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, drug addiction.
Therapeutic interventions have been developed in some cases, but knowledge
about prevention has made even greater strides. The National High Blood
Pressure Education Program of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute,
for example, has helped to reduce the incidence of stroke and heart attacks
significantly.
To illustrate this line of research, I have chosen a web exhibit on
research into a non-addicting synthetic opiate called "Drugs as Medicines,
