THROMBOEMBOLIC obstruction of the major pulmonary arteries due to unresolved
pulmonary embolism is a potentially correctable cause of pulmonary
hypertension. Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension of sufficient
severity to warrant surgical intervention is more common than previously
suspected. After surgery, the majority of patients have a substantial improvement in hemodynamic variables, with improvements in functional status and long-term survival.
