Pulmonary
thromboendarterectomy as a surgical option for CTEPH was first proposed by
Hollister and Cull in 1956. The surgical technique involves removing organised thrombi along with a thin lining of intima while leaving the media intact. Because CTEPH is a bilateral disease in all but a few cases, sternotomy is used to gain access to both pulmonary arteries to facilitate the complete removal of the thrombi. |
