Thanks to computers we
no longer have to map by hand. It is now possible to have a computer create maps and add
different layers of geographic-based data onto these maps. While GIS is used by many different fields of study, the application of GIS in Public Health has been in the area of environmental epidemiology. For example, epidemiologists can see if there is any relationship between the location of a hazardous waste site and the occurrence of cancer.
