Among the
elderly in the United States, living in an area with a shortage of primary
care physicians is the most important risk factor for having a preventable
hospitalization. When the supply of primary care physicians is taken in
account, characteristics such as racial minority, level of education,
marital status, income level, and additional health insurance are
unimportant.
