Recent estimates report that fatal anaphylaxis occurs in about 4% of cases. Previous estimates of fatalities have ranged as high as 10%. There is increased risk of death when the body's homeostatic mechanisms are interrupted as when patients are being treated with beta blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, or when there is underlying adrenal insufficiency. Epidemiologic studies have also suggested increased risk of death in patients with asthma or coronary artery disease. |
