Increasing
community involvement in public health interventions--moving from passive to
active involvement--is an ethical imperative. This slide highlights one of
the 12 principles of the ethical practice of public health of the
(U.S.-based) PHLS. These principles have been endorsed by the American
Public Health Association, the Public Health Foundation, and the American
College of Preventive Medicine, among other organizations.
This concept of community consent for public health
intervention is analogous to informed consent provided by a patient for a
clinical intervention.
