I work as a Consultant Diabetologist based at the Newcastle Diabetes Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England. I have been involved in study of outcomes of diabetic pregnancy since 1990.  In 1990 we thought that the outcome of diabetic pregnancy had improved and that the main problem was the high rate of caesarean section. We assumed from the published data that the outcome of diabetic pregnancy as measured by perinatal mortality and congenital malformations rate was similar to that of the non-diabetic general population. An audit of outcome of diabetic pregnancy showed this assumption was false.
