In women, the early symptoms of gonorrhea are often mild, and many women are asymptomatic. Women with no symptoms or mild untreated symptomatic infection are at risk for developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Regardless of the symptoms, once a person is infected with gonorrhea, he or she can spread the infection to others. The use of condoms or other protective barriers reduce the risk of transmission.
