In terms of reversibility, the meta-analysis of treatment
intervention studies by McMahon and Collins suggests that, of the 25% increase in coronary
heart disease risk consequent upon 6mmHg rise in diastolic blood pressure, around 14% of
this is reversed by anti-hypertensive therapy lowering usual diastolic blood pressure by
the same amount. More recent meta-analyses have increased this benefit to around 17%.
