A recent analysis of data from the UK Prospective Diabetes
Study has also compared observational and intervention data, and suggests that the
interventional effects of blood pressure lowering on reducing risks of stroke and coronary
heart disease exceed the attributable risks consequent upon elevations in blood pressure
by the same amount, although the confidence intervals are wide. These findings, of a
greater benefit attributable to blood pressure lowering than can be attributed to the
damage of blood pressure elevation, have been seen particularly in studies of treatment of
isolated systolic hypertension, and studies in diabetic patients. |
