Let me now introduce the theme of my talk. I am going to
start by considering the concept of risk factors and cardiovascular risk in diabetic
subjects. I am going to talk about the evidence, about intervention for glucose lowering,
for blood pressure and for lipid management in preventing cardiovascular disease in
patients with diabetes. I am going to discuss primary and secondary prevention in diabetic
subjects and look at what evidence based that is for management. I will talk specifically
about the case of therapy with aspirin. I will finish by suggesting that we should be
considering the levels of absolute risk rather the levels of risk factors, when deciding
whether to initiate or alter treatment in these patients. |
