和血钾一样，即使全身镁含量大量损耗，血镁水平也会保持正常。胞内镁离子水平是较为精确的量度；但是红细胞内镁含量和单核细胞内镁含量相关性不高，并且在不同疾病状态下这一量度在肌肉中相关性也不高。在这两者中单核细胞内的镁含量可以比较好的指示心脏的镁的情况。例如，目前对冠心病监护室的病人进行的研究表明，只有7.7％血浆中镁水平较低，但53％显示单核细胞内镁水平降低。
