Among meth abusers, there is an increase in
child abuse and neglect cases. Meth users are so absorbed in their meth
abuse that they are unable to parent their children. Children then end up
parenting themselves. In addition to a child’s greater risk for abuse and neglect, research indicates they have an increased risk for substance abuse later in life. Another impact on families is a rise in domestic disputes, which can lead to violence. In addition to the physical, psychological, and health and safety effects on the family, society also pays a price for substance abuse. These include increased costs for health and human services, foster care, the courts, law enforcement, counseling, and the educational system. When a family member abuses any drug, the entire family and the community suffer. |
