“Indigenous education is characterised generally
by lower levels of success, lower levels of achievement, lower retention rates and
inadequate education. The low levels of attendance and low retention rates are a
reflection of the widely held perception among Indigenous people that the education system
is irrelevant and inappropriate to their needs.” (National Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Clearinghouse) While
the disadvantage referred to above is valid at a national level, there are areas where the
disadvantage is particularly acute.
