Various measures
of income demonstrate the disparity between the Indigenous and the general Australian
population. For example, in 1996 the median income for people in the “prime working
age” group was 40% less for the Indigenous than for the general Australian population.
(ABS 1998) Government payments are
the main source of income for more than half of the Indigenous population. With current
economic trends the prospects for Indigenous employment and income are unlikely to
improve.
