There is a need for a broad education strategy that will address the need to train Indigenous health workers at all levels, as well as improve the understanding of all health workers of the issues in Indigenous health. (Ring 1998)

Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) are faced with high expectations, often without having been provided with appropriate training or specialised skills. Programs for the training of AHWs are steadily developing. There is a drive for the establishment of teaching health centres. (Ring 1998)

There is also a lack of skilled health professionals in remote areas, especially in Indigenous communities. Indigenous people are very poorly represented in the ranks of such professionals. A number of initiatives are now in place to attract medical practitioners to remote communities.
