FH is associated with premature cardiovascular disease and decreased life expectancy. The excess mortality from FH was described in kindreds that were investigated, because the probands or even multiple family members had presented with premature cardiovascular disease. The natural history of FH has not been studied without selection on cardiovascular disease and as a result risk estimates for (asymptomatic) carriers in the general population are lacking.
