Medicine’s code of ethics is far more
stringent the law. The American Medical Association has established a code of conduct for
defining conflict of interests. This code confirms the primary goal of the medical
profession to render service to humanity emphasizing that reward or financial
gain is a subordinate consideration and under no circumstance may physicians
place their own financial interests above the welfare of their patients. Online entrepreneurs, business and medical, have rushed to cash-in on the
Internet Bonanza, and promises of “once in a lifetime” wealth, often placing their own
financial interests above the welfare of patients. These actions are in direct conflict
with the Principles of Medical Ethics; they have been a driving impetus for establishing
Medical Internet Ethics. |
